School: The End is Near!
The end of the school year is fast approaching. We are working hard to complete a few things we started later in the year to go towards next year.
Benjamin wrote a story! I wrote out a fill in the blank style story, and gave him a list of possible choices to create a short little paragraph.
We have also been working on beginning and ending blends...
We worked on time this past week, as well as seasons, months, days of the week...
We read this book for science...
We continued working in our force and motion lapbook...
And then we did a couple of models to really learn the concept of things like force, work and friction. We learned that friction is at work when a car brakes at a stop light. Benjamin and dad built a remote control car, and dad explained how motors work. Dad also found a toy motor that you can take apart and put together to help Benjamin learn more about motors!
Benjamin built this one with mom. This model needs to be wound by a little crank on the side. Dad explained how gears work and what was causing the car to move.
I also set up a small race ramp. We tested how far the car would go down the ramp, putting things at the bottom of the ramp like: ceramic tile, carpet, tinfoil, a towel, sand paper, and hardwood floor. Each object caused different levels of friction. We concluded that the more bumpy a surface, the more friction which caused the car to stop sooner.
Our friends lent us their tractor and Benjamin has been very busy watching dad and having rides on this new toy.
We have less than 2 chapters left in ``Little House in the Big Woods``
Another homeschool family we know is doing the same book, so we got together to make some maple candy like the Ingalls` did in the book...
It didn`t work, but the kids enjoyed eating the maple flavored snow! (we didn`t use real snow; we made it in the blender! So thankful we don`t actually have real snow anymore!)
