We are doing a variety of things for Social Studies. Ben colored this map, and we color coded it and I helped him make a key for all of the Provinces and Territories...
Rachel has been working on this Neighbourhood coloring book, covering community and occupations...
We are also using "Canada My Country" work sheets.
Today, we worked on 2 of the kids Social Studies outcomes; the grade one outcome-differences between rights, roles, expectations and responsibility. The K outcome-roles, responsibilities and expectations have a purpose. First, we defined all of these words. Then, we discussed them by giving examples. Here is what they came up with...
1) Q: I have a right to? A: not be hurt
Q: I do not have a right to? A: steal from people
2) Q: What does mom expect from you? A: to not interrupt, to not hurt people
3) Q: What are some of your responsibilities? A: chopping wood, obey mom and dad, be kind, do chores
4) Q: What is your role in our family? A: treat others the way you want to be treated, do what is expected of you (chores, etc)
5) What do you think would happen if we did not expect anything of others and had no responsibilities? A: people would speak mean to each other, fighting, stealing
Then, we went on to Social Structures. We talked about what a social structure is and listed a few different social structures: church, family, school, sports team, a community. Then, we made a web for a few of them, with the social structure in the middle and the rules webbing off of it that are expected behaviours for that social structure:
Our Community...
Our Family...
Church...
The kids have been doing a lot of work around here, as we are all getting ready for winter. It both surprises and thrills me to see them helping out. They are learning a lot about hard work, responsibility, team work. This is a great addition to Health and Careers, but also great physical work.
Along with all their hard work, they are also busy playing with friends, playing outside while there is still good weather, running around. Rachel starts ballet next week and Benjamin will be doing karate very soon. We are in full swing around here and the little bit of routine feels good :)
