School Week
We found some objects around the house...
Then, described the objects using words such as hard, soft, smooth, rough, squishy. Then we sorted the objects into groups. First into paper, plastic, and "other". Then into hard and soft...
Then we experimented with floating and non-floating materials...
We also talked about how water changes the state and mass of some objects, others it doesn't change at all.
Then we experimented with mass...
And magnetic material...
We sorted the materials into magnetic and non-magnetic...
We experimented with stretchy and non-stretchy materials...
We used paper towel, a plastic bag and saran wrap.
We talked about the `stretchiness` of an object serving a purpose, like saran wrap being able to stretch over a bowl to keep food sealed and fresh.
Then, I sent the kids into the yard to gather objects...
The kids then had to describe their objects to me, and tell me if the objects could be changed and how...
We also watched some Magic School Bus, with some great episodes on the water cycle (including the states of matter), one about floating and sinking objects, and one about rocks and water erosion.
Next we will be studying the three states of matter...
For Social Studies, we continued with our study on Canada.
We looked at our big world map...
We put a star where we live, and then we discussed and looked at pictures of all the provinces, talking about the land in all of the provinces: from the Appalachians in the East, to the Rockies in the West; the Prairies where the kids were born, to the Arctic North.
The kids have been super active the last couple of weeks. Aside from ballet and gymnastics, they have been hauling and stacking firewood, having play dates, bike riding, playing in the yard, going to the park, helping dad clean up the yard, and getting rides with dad on the tractor...
