Social Studies

I have so much to blog from our past 2 or so weeks of school that I thought it best to make some separate blog posts.

Social Studies:

We read ``How A House Works`` which is a great book about the technology in the home: electrical systems, structural systems, plumbing systems, drainage systems, climate control systems, furniture maintenance, clean up, waste and recycling, communication systems, yard care, clothing systems, food, and safety.

This was also a great book because it was packed full of financial stewardship and stewardship within a family as well. It talks about such things as: mortgages, bills, saving for things you desire instead of using credit cards, buying what you need, taking care of your things. It talks about how things cost money and we work hard to get them, how to save money and live modestly as well as doing your part (chores, etc) with a good attitude.

It also discusses recycling, waste removal and proper care of the environment.

We also read a book called ``Earth Day`` which is about the 3 R`s-reduce, reuse, recycle! Also talks about conserving energy, climate changes and what we can do at home to help.

We continued our study on Canada this past couple of weeks by reading some books about our very own province. We read ``A Day at the Sugar Bush``, which is all about making maple syrup! This also was packed full of great Canadian symbols like, of course, the maple leaf. It also explained how the pioneers made the syrup and how modern day technology has changed the process.

We also read ``A Mountain Alphabet`` and discussed the wildlife found in the Rockies. Then, the kids drew a picture of the Rockies, including the wildlife .
