School Fun

We have been working on the 4 directions in Social Studies: North, East, South, West. Benjamin really caught onto this very quickly! He can also name and point to (on a map) BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec! You can ask him, for example, where is Saskatchewan from BC, and he will answer "East"! Pretty sure I couldn't do that at his age ;)

Here are some pages from Benjamin's Skill Sharpeners Workbook; it focus on reading and phonics...

Benjamin read this Bible story last week...

We are working on vowels, silent "e", long and short vowels, along with our regular printing practice and spelling...

In Science, we started Force and Motion. Here are the vocabulary words we are working on...

We did a little experiment to test the effects of force; we applied a small amount of force to a toy car using a pencil to see how far the car would go. Then, did the same thing but applied more force...

The results...

We also went on a nature walk. We talked about a lot! We talked about the water cycle, and the run off from the mountains; where the source of water comes from for lakes, oceans, etc. We talked about why clouds precipitate. Benjamin noticed the water flowing down the hills on our street and took notice that the water going down steeper slopes travels faster than the water on less of a slope. We talked about what water does on level ground: stands still. What can make the still water move, I asked? Forces like: people, wind, boats, animals. Benjamin was also very fascinated with the pattern in the water streams on our street, caused by the rocky ground. We talked about how that is similar to how water filtration works.

Here are a couple of math samples...

Benjamin has started to add and subtract with numbers up to 7. He can also count up to 40 (sometimes 50) and is quite proud of it!

Here is a little "art" project we did last week...who doesn't like robots?

The kids have been getting outside for lots of play; even going to the park! The weather has been great, and we are all really happy that spring is almost here :)
