The Journey Continues
Antarctica!
Today, we journeyed to the coldest place on the planet: Antarctica! We also talked a bit about the Arctic, and the difference between the two. Here the kids are about to board the plane in their winter gear...
Once we got there, we became scientists whom had come to the Antarctic to study the Antarctic animal life...
...we made a colloge of our scientific findings, then talked about what keeps these animals warm in the extreme temperatures (blubber)!!
Then we did a little ice experiment...which will melt the fastest and slowest; ice on its own, salted ice, or insulated ice...
We went outside to explore while our ice melted...
we pretended to come across some penguins...
The kids couldn't quite get down the penguin walk, but it was fun trying!! Next, we gathered some snow for our next project...
Then, we came back in and checked on our ice...
The insulated ice melted the slowest, and the salted ice had melted the most...why?
The insulation had kept the ice from melting! Just like a penguin or whale's blubber keeps the animal warm by insulating it!
Now for some real fun...
The kids watched The Magic School Bus "In the Arctic" which talked more about animal's "insulation", and after a fish dinner, we had some delicious ice cream!!
What a fun day!
Looks like fun! especially the ice cream part lol!! :) Salt melts snow because it lowers waters freezing point...check out this website: http://www.whyzz.com/why-does-salt-melt-ice
ReplyDeleteI know, but couldn't quite find a connection between the salted ice and Antarctica...but, we talked about how dad uses salt on our ice outside and why LOL
